Studying Library and Information science education in Sweden

The Swedish School of Library and Information Science was founded in 1972 and became a part of the University College of Borås. The school is an average with over 11 000 students, of which there are aproximately 5 500 full-time students. Since 1993 LIS (Library and Information science) has been an academic education. Until then Borås was also the only school to have this education, but after the academisation things have changed and there are now altogether five schools with LIS. The schools are located in Umeå, Växjö, Uppsala and Lund and all have dirrefent profiles. For examples in Växjö they focus mainly on Pedagogy.

In Sweden one university point equals one weeks worth of work, so there are 20 points per semester and 40 per year. In Borås most get a „magister“ degree worth 160 points. You can choose yourself if you want to do all four years (160 points) in the LIS subject or only two (80 points) and the other in any subject you want. But at least half have to be from the subject you want the degree from, the others can be in any subject you want. From computer science to humanistic studies. The people in our class comes from a broad variety of courses, and they all put their own aspects into their studies. Even if you choose to do two or four years in Boras, you still do the introduction semester together.

The aim of the first semester is to give an introduction to the key problems in LIS and the different perspectives from which it can be looked upon. This is done during the following three subcourses:

The development of LIS and three of the different subject areas (8 credits),Organising and searching for Information (7 credits) and Central Issues within LIS (5 credits). Most of the lectures are hold in front of the whole class, but we’re also divided into smaller groups with which we are doing some more independent work.

Before the start of the second semester, we have to choose one of four different perspectives. The purpose of it is to get a deeper knowledge in one area, since the field of LIS is quite big and cover many different aspects. You then study in that perspective for at least two semesters. Then you can either write you magister in the choosen perspective or choose a new one, depending on what kind of degree you’re aiming at. If you want to do four years of LIS you choose another perspective, but its enough with one if you’re only doing two years.

Here follows the four perspectives and a smaller explanation of them:

  1. Libaries, Culture & Information from a social perspective
    • The central question in this perspective is about why the libraries has been established and how they develop. This, with consideration to the changes in the society and how it influences Information technology etc.
  2. Knowledge Organisation
    • This perspective includes studies of methods for collecting, storing, processing and retrieving information. It touches areas such as classification, indexing, Information retrieval (IR) and constructions of databases.
  3. Individual & Group Interactions with libraries
    • Considers problems like how the need for information arises and examines what things that prevents satisfying such needs. It also discuss the methods that can be developed to fulfill the needs.
  4. Information & Resources Management
    • It examines the use and development of information resources in Organisations. It raises questions concerned with different kinds of organisations, personal policies and other issues of services

Normally, the majority of the class choose either the first or the third perspective. It can have something to do with the school’s long tradition of Library studies. Both of us choose perspective number three, and its been consisting of lectures, group works, seminars, individual papers and a smaller essay. Since we have studied in Prague for the autumn semester, we have take other courses then those at home, but we joined the rest of the class to take a course in Research Methodology & Theory of Science. It is considered to be basic knowledge for university graduates and everyone have to take at least two courses in methodology.

The fourth and last semester (at least for us two) will consist of writing a magister, which is a kind of swedish master thesis. We write it in our choosen pespective, and we got tutors provided to help us on the way. The very last part is a seminar where we discuss our essays with a smaller group of both students and tutors.

The Student Union

Every student is a member of the Student union at the university where they study. There some discussion about this because there’s no choice in it, you have to be a member and pay the fee. (Aprox. 900 czk per semester for att fulltime student.) The purpose of the union is for work for the well-being of the students, to represent them and to ensure their rights, both to the school in general and any teacher in particular if there is a problem. They have offical seats in most of the schools committees and councils and are not accountable to the school, this to ensure that they are not influenced in any way. They also have a „introduction“ to the school for new students, where they give a tour, show them everything important, how the school work and everything new student need to know. In general you can say that they work towards making the student lives better, and this also includes outside of school. They have a pub just for students (and their guests), can have Cinema clubs, trips or just things that maked life better. They also assign every exchange student a mentor to help understanding school, Swedes, Sweden and life here.

Vývoj knihovní a informační vědy a tři z dalších oblastí (8 kreditů), Pořádání a vyhledávání informací (7 kreditů) a Hlavní otázky knihovní a informační vědy (5 kreditů).

  2. Pořádání znalostí
    • Tento směr zahrnuje studia metod shromažďování, ukládání, zpracovávání a vyhledávání informací. Dotýká se oblastí klasifikace, indexování, vyhledávání informací a tvorby databází.
  3. Individuální a skupinová interakce s knihovnami
  4. Management informací a zdrojů
    • Zkoumá využití a vývoj informačních zdrojů v organizacích.
